Benguela

Benguela is a city and municipality, capital of the Benguela province, in western Angola, composed only of the main commune, which is organized into six zones.

It borders the municipality of Catumbela to the north, the municipalities of Bocoio and Caimbambo to the east, the municipality of Baía Farta to the south, and the Atlantic Ocean to the west.

The term "Benguela" is believed to be of Umbundu origin, rooted in the terms "venga" or "mbenga," from the verb "okuvenga" or "okuvengela," which in Portuguese means "to soil, cloud, or soil," a meaning associated with the water of the Catumbela River; it can also mean "dark or opaque," related to the dense forest that previously surrounded the Bay of Cows.

Church of the People - In the three-hundred-year-old city of São Filipe de Benguela, the Church of Our Lady of the People was the only temple that witnessed the impiety of the times and the abandonment of the faithful. Others that were erected here either crumbled under the premature decrepitude of precarious materials or were dismantled by the pickaxe of men insensitive to the spiritual outbursts of faith and the aesthetic emotions of architecture.
